Join a Centre of Excellence in Craft & Conservation

West Dean is a unique place to work — a creative and inspiring environment set within the beautiful 6,350-acre West Dean Estate in the South Downs National Park. Our internationally recognised College provides specialist education in arts, craft, design, and conservation across two campuses: rural West Dean in Sussex and the KLC School of Design in central London.

We are now seeking a talented and passionate Subject Tutor for the FdA Books & Bindings programme to join our School of Arts and Conservation.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced bookbinding practitioner to help shape the next generation of makers. Working with the Subject Leader and wider academic team, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality practical teaching across the FdA, BA, and MFA programmes.
  • Support curriculum development and contribute to programme planning and enhancement.
  • Maintain a safe, professional, and well-organised workshop environment.
  • Participate in assessment, provide clear feedback, and support student progression.
  • Assist with student recruitment activities, portfolio reviews, and open days.
  • Contribute to the organisation of the annual West Dean Bookbinding Competition.

About You

You will bring:

  • Extensive professional expertise in bookbinding, including advanced and decorative techniques.
  • Experience teaching or training learners with varied levels of experience.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • A commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and creative learning environment.

Experience in Higher Education, a teaching qualification, and membership of sector organisations are desirable but not essential.

What We Offer

  • 38 days annual leave (including bank holidays, pro rata)
  • Generous contributory pension scheme
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Free access to West Dean Gardens and campus facilities (pool, library, tennis courts)
  • Discounts on short courses, shops, events, and hospitality
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • On-site parking and subsidised B&B rates

How to Apply

If you’re excited to share your craft expertise and inspire future bookbinders, we’d love to hear from you.
